What is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used screening tool that estimates whether your weight is healthy relative to your height. It is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in meters (kg/m²).

While BMI is not a perfect measure — it doesn’t directly measure body fat or account for muscle mass — it provides a quick, reliable starting point for understanding your health status and risk of weight-related conditions like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension.

Our free fitness calculator combines BMI, TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure), and Ideal Body Weight in one place — so you get a complete picture of your health in seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a healthy BMI range? +
A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy for most adults. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is classified as obese. Note that these ranges may differ slightly for children and certain ethnic groups.
What is TDEE and how is it calculated? +
TDEE stands for Total Daily Energy Expenditure — the total number of calories your body burns in a day. It is calculated by multiplying your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) by an activity multiplier. This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which is considered the most accurate formula available.
How many calories should I eat to lose weight? +
To lose weight safely, aim for a calorie deficit of 300–500 calories below your TDEE. This typically results in 0.3–0.5 kg of fat loss per week. Avoid extreme deficits below 1200 kcal/day (women) or 1500 kcal/day (men) without medical supervision.
Is this calculator accurate for Indians? +
WHO and Indian health guidelines recommend that Indians use a lower BMI cut-off — overweight starts at ≥23 and obesity at ≥25 — since South Asians tend to carry more abdominal fat at lower BMIs. Our calculator shows standard BMI ranges, so please factor this in when reading your results.
Can I use this calculator for children or teenagers? +
Standard adult BMI calculators are not suitable for children and teenagers under 18. BMI for children is age- and gender-specific (BMI-for-age percentile). Please consult a pediatrician for accurate assessment of children’s weight status.
